LIFE OF ST. DUNSTAN

Byrhtferth of Ramsey

St. Dunstan was an English saint and perhaps the most famous Archbishop of Canterbury. During the course of his lifetime, he was successively Abbot of Glastonbury Abbey, Bishop of Worcester, Bishop of London and later canonized. This work has long been attributed to the Anglo-Saxon author, Byrhtferth, although historically, it is unlikely to be from his pen. It does grant us a valuable historical source of his life, likely from about a century after his death from an otherwise unknown monastic writer. St. Dunstan served as an important minister of state to several English kings during his tenure over the English church. His life, therefore, stands as a significant sentinel point in the development of uniquely English Christianity.
