THE RAMBAN PATTU

Ramban the Archdeacon

The Ramban Pattu is the traditional Nasarani song about the coming of St. Thomas the Apostle to Southern India in the first century AD. It details his movements along the coast, the churches that he founded, and his eventually death and martyrdom on the mountain near in Mylapore. While it was sung for centuries by the Nasarani community in Kerala, it was not written down until the early 17th century, which forms the basis of questions into its origins. The original Malayalam text is included here as well as an introduction and commentary explain the nature and origin of the text. Its over four hundred poetic stanzas are available here for the first time in English.
